The P23288365 Starter Motor is an electric motor that converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical torque to crank the Volvo D12D diesel engine during starting. Mounted on the engine flywheel housing, it engages the flywheel ring gear through a pinion gear to spin the engine crankshaft at sufficient RPM until the engine fires and runs under its own power.
